Chytrid Resources

Genomic Resources

Sequence data for species from both Chytridiomycota and Blastocladiomycota are available from a number of databases, including those housed at NCBI and JGI (see below). A list of in-progress sequencing projects can be found here

Protocols

For current protocols, check out the chytrid protocols.io where we deposit step-by-step instructions. Protocols on protocols.io are archived with citable DOIs and can be modified by the community. If you have a chytrid protocol, we encourage you to deposit it at protocols.io and add it to the line up! For more information about protocols.io, see this FAQ.

Instructions on how to your own chytrid strains can be found here as part of Joyce Longcore’s University of Maine chytrid website.

For information on working responsibly with chytrid amphibian pathogens, see “Responsible biosecurity and risk mitigation for laboratory research on emerging pathogens of amphibians” which was published in Diseases of Aquatic Organisms. Link, Full text, Supplement.

Strain Repository

CZEUM - Collection of Zoosporic Eufungi at the University of Michigan

This repository unites a number of historically important collections of zoosporic fungi including Dr. Joyce Longcore, Dr. Martha Powell, Dr. Peter Letcher, and Dr. Ralph Emerson’s Allomyces strains. Strains are available for distribution and new accessions are welcome.

Additional Online Chytrid Resources

Chytrid Fungi Online (NSF PEET Project). “Here you will find information on members of the Phylum Chytridiomycota, including a description of genera, tips and techniques on how to isolate chytrids, current hypotheses of chytrid systematics (includes both taxonomy and phylogeny), links to other relevant websites, and a searchable reference database.”  (Description from the linked website).

Maine Chytrid Laboratory. Joyce Longcore’s lab website at the University of Maine includes information on how to isolate and grow various chytrid species, as well as photographs of cultures.

Chytrid Movies This youtube channel includes movies of chytrid cells useful for teaching and presentations.

Bsal Task Force. This website, maintained by the Bsal Task Force, includes information about Batrachochytrium salamandrivorans, its impact on salamanders, and ongoing efforts to prevent and ameliorate the impact of its spread.

marinefungi.org. This website contains information and images of various species of marine fungi, including many chytrid species.
